Hand Tools for the Variety of Tasks

Hand tools are an essential part of any toolkit and are used every day by all types of tradespeople for a variety of tasks and applications. Manual hand tools encompass a wide range of product types designed to assist with and speed up the task at hand, with a wide variety to meet the needs of any requirements, from the most basic jobs to the largest construction projects.

So, in this blog, I will be discussing various hand tools and for what purposes they are used. Keep on reading to enhance your knowledge.

What are hand tools?

A hand tool is any tool that is operated by hand rather than using a motor. Wrenches, pliers, cutters, files, striking tools, hit or hammered tools, screwdrivers, clamps, snips, saws, drills, and knives are examples of hand tools.

The shape of a hand tool and the design of the handle largely determine how it is used. One of the most important aspects of tool handle design is the length of the handle. Tool handles are available in a variety of cross-sectional shapes, including circular, triangular, and square. The non-slip, non-porous, and non-conductive handle makes it easier to hold while reducing the risk of chemical contamination and increasing electrical protection.

Types of Hand Tools

  • CUTTING TOOLS: In the context of machining, a cutting tool or cutter is any tool that is used to remove material from a workpiece through shear deformation. Cutting can be accomplished with either single-point or multi-point tools.

Features: Cutting tools have toughness so that they do not fracture or chip, hardness so that they can withstand the heat generated during the metal cutting process, and wear resistance so that they have a long working life.

  • HAMMERS AND MALLETS: Hammers and mallets are simple, handheld tools that are used to apply linear impact force to an object. The hammer’s mass is concentrated in the strike zone to impart as much force as possible. They are effective at driving fasteners and marring materials.

Features: Hand-powered hammers are being phased out of some carpentry and upholstery applications in favor of nail guns and staple guns. To press-fit plasterboard and wooden items, mallets are used. They are also used when a hammer may generate a spark and ignite a flammable substance.

  • SCREWDRIVERS AND NUT DRIVERS: A screwdriver is a hand or power tool that is used to drive screws. A standard screwdriver consists of a handle and a shaft with a tip that the user inserts into the screw head before turning the handle. A nut driver is a tool for tightening nuts and bolts.

Features: The shaft is typically made of tough steel to resist bending or twisting. The tip can be hardened to increase wear resistance, coated with a dark tip coating to improve visual contrast between the tip and the screw, or ridged or treated to increase ‘grip.’ Handles are typically made of wood, metal, or plastic with hexagonal, square, or oval cross-sections to improve grip and keep the tool from rolling when set down.
